Speyside Whisky Tour

Speyside Whisky Tour

This Distillery tour takes you to the Speyside whisky region and visits one of the smaller Distilleries and the largest producer of Single Malt Whisky in Scotland.

We start the day by heading East of Inverness to the small town of Forres in Morayshire and to Benromach Distillery.

Benromach Distillery was first established in 1898, the current Distillery was opened by Prince (now King) Charles in 1998.

The Distillery is owned by the Urquhart family who also own Gordon and Macphail, the Elgin based Whisky specialists who are renowned for maturing and bottling some of the worlds rarest Malt Whiskies.

Today it is the 4th Generation of the Urquhart family who run the business and Benromach produces a traditional handcrafted single Malt Whisky based on the character of Speyside Whiskies from long ago.

You will be taken on a tour of the Distillery which takes 1 hour and you will then enjoy two drams of their finest Whisky.

The tour takes 1 hour and costs £10 per person.

After leaving Benromach we then head towards Elgin and turn south to go to Craigellachie where we visit The Speyside Cooperage.

The Speyside Cooperage opened in 1947.

Coopering is an ancient art and this 5 star award winning Exhibition will take you on a journey from Acorn to Cask.

You will be able to watch from the viewing gallery these master craftsmen at work as they make and repair the casks and you will experience the sights, sounds and smells of a working cooperage.

The Tour takes 45 minutes and costs £5

Following our visit to the Cooperage it is time for a spot of lunch and we can discuss where to have lunch according to your preferences.

After our lunch we head towards Dufftown and our finest visit of the day to Glenfiddich Distillery.

Dufftown is home to eight Distilleries and two of the most famous Distilleries are Glenfiddich and The Balvenie, both of which are still privately owned by the Grant family.

William Grant and his family of seven children built Glenfiddich Distillery by hand in one year and the first production happened on Christmas day in 1887.

Glenfiddich Distillery is the largest producing Distillery of single Malt Whisky in Scotland producing 10 million litres a year. Glenfiddich means Valley of the Deer in Gaelic.

The Distillery has 30 copper stills and they employ their own coppersmiths to look after them. They also have their own cooperage and bottling plant. Their 43 warehouses have the capacity to store 800,000 casks.

In 1969 they were the 1st Distillery to open a visitors centre which recently was renovated and they now receive 125,000 visitors a year.

Glenfiddich owns the title as The Best Selling Single Malt Whisky. They also have the oldest single Malt on the market. Cask 843 was filled in 1937 and after the “Angels Share” only 61 bottles remained of this 64 year old whisky.

We are sure you will enjoy your tour of this lovely Distillery which takes 1.5 hours and after you will receive 4 drams to taste – a 12/15/18 and 21 year old. At a cost per person of £20 this tour is fantastic and excellent value.

When you have finished the tour and tasting we will drive you back to your accommodation in Inverness or the surrounding area.
